A refrigerant’s job is not simply to be cold. It is to put a known quantity of thermal mass into a pack-out your team can repeat identically, shift after shift, across lanes that vary by season, duration and handling — and, because Nordic Ice® refrigerants are reusable, to do that again on the next cycle without losing performance. When the refrigerant is wrong for the job, every other part of the shipment has to compensate for it: more insulation, more volume, more freight cost, and more room for something to go wrong.
Nordic Cold Chain Solutions manufactures reusable gel refrigerants in a range of formats, conditioning states and disposal profiles, distributed from eight sites across the United States. This page covers how to choose between them.
Nordic Ice® refrigerants run at volume inside specialty pharmacy fulfillment and high-throughput ecommerce operations, where the same pack-out has to hold up across thousands of shipments and dozens of lanes. That is the requirement the range is built around: consistency a team can standardize on, not peak performance in a single test.

The biggest single decision is not which product you pick, but how it is conditioned before it goes in the box. Conditioning determines how much energy the refrigerant absorbs and how it behaves against your payload.
Most Nordic Ice® refrigerants can be conditioned all three ways. That is what makes them practical to standardize across a mixed shipping profile instead of stocking a different product for every lane.
Nordic Ice® Regular Gel Packs are the working default: durable, reusable polymer ice in a puncture-resistant exterior, sized for everything from parcel to pallet. Choose these when the requirement is dependable cooling without a specific geometry or disposal constraint.
Nordic Ice® Bricks are semi-rigid foam refrigerants that hold their shape through freezing, thawing and transit. Each brick is injected with a specific coolant volume and vacuum sealed, so weight and performance stay consistent pack to pack. They are the right answer when packout tolerances are tight or the lane is long — cross-country and international pharmaceutical shipments in particular.
Nordic PharmaFlat™ is built for high-volume pharmaceutical fulfillment and automated packing systems, where a consistent, shape-stable frozen input matters more than any single pack’s performance. Nordic Ice® Linked Gel Packs apply the same flat-format thinking to packages where product space is critical and a flat refrigerant is the only thing that fits; they are guaranteed to gel without leaking, even on long-duration shipments.
Nordic Ice® Wrap is the thinnest profile refrigerant in the range. Its multi-cell design wraps around products of almost any shape, can be cut to size, and adds both thermal mass and a protective buffer. It fits small parcels and pallet shipments alike, conditioned ambient, refrigerated or frozen.
Nordic Ice® No Sweat Gel Packs use a multi-layered exterior that absorbs condensation. Reach for these when the packaging itself is vulnerable — paper-labelled products, gift boxes, wine.
Every refrigerant in the range can be produced in custom sizes, and most in custom exteriors. If the size you need is not listed, the product engineering team can build to your packout geometry rather than asking you to design around a stock dimension.
For many shippers the disposal path now constrains the choice as tightly as the temperature range does, particularly for direct-to-patient and direct-to-consumer programs where the recipient has to deal with what arrives.
Usually a refrigerated-conditioned gel pack, or a frozen-conditioned pack with a barrier between refrigerant and payload. The deciding factors are transit duration, payload mass and how much ambient exposure the lane involves. Bricks are the common choice for longer refrigerated lanes because of their consistent thermal mass.
Validation belongs to you and your lanes — it is specific to your product, your routes and your SOPs, and no supplier can perform it on your behalf. What you need from a refrigerant supplier is design-tested performance and the test data to support your own validation work. Nordic provides both.
Often, yes. Several products in the range are food-grade and equally suited to pharmaceutical use, which is what makes standardizing across a mixed profile realistic. Where the requirements diverge is usually disposal and label sensitivity rather than thermal performance.
That depends on payload, duration, shipper construction and lane conditions, and it is exactly the question lab testing answers. A packaging assessment will give you a pack-out specification rather than an estimate.
Tell us what you ship, where it goes and how long it spends in transit, and our team will recommend a refrigerant and pack-out built around that profile.
